About this object
The Art and Design of Howard Smith was on view at the museum from May 10, 2025 to February 23, 2026. Smith (1928–2021) was a New Jersey artist whose textiles and ceramics were made by some of Scandinavia's biggest design firms in the heyday of postwar modernism. He was one of the few Black artists of his generation to work with industry, and he brought bold color and a picture language that mixed abstract forms with African symbols.
